The essence of most business is usually geared towards making high profits; while at the same time satisfy their customers. Most businesses are legally established to conduct trade of goods and services to consumers in return for a financial gain. There also can be businesses that are formed not-for-profit or are referred to state-owned business. Businesses are geared towards acting internationally for a viable and profitable work. There are commonly large and small scale business, operating for different purposes, usually focused on earning profits.

There are also many forms of business operated in a variety of jurisdictions. For example there exists sole proprietorship, partnership, cooperation and cooperative organizations. There are also many types of business that are classified in many ways. For example there is the Agriculture and mining, financial, real estate, retailers and distributors and service type business, which all can be either large or small entities.

To operate a profitable small business the owner should consider consulting with a financial expert. Additionally, the small business operator may need to do extensive research in setting up the business as well as understand the specific market and set realistic business plans, in order to make increased levels of profits. According to the financial analysts and their records, the most profitable small business that possess high levels of profit margins are businesses such as a dentists accountants including bookkeeping, tax preparations, and payroll services. There are other small businesses that are most profitable such as investment advisors and portfolio managers, legal services and of course, physicians. The financial records also declares that the most profitable small business were the least affected by the global recession. There might be questions as to why theses small insignificant businesses continue to make insurmountable levels of profits. They thrive and remain successful in achieving higher levels of profits are because these small businesses usually provide an essential and necessary service. Therefore, even when there is a recession in progress, an individual may still need to visit a physician or a dentist, they may also need to file their taxes or consult with a financial advisor so as to survive the conditions of any recession.

For a potential small business owner they may need to consider the importance of marketing strategies. This is so as marketing and research is vital to the improvement and enhanced profitability of a small business. In addition, in order for a small business to become profitable, the potential owner may need to recognize the significance of attracting and maintaining customers. Reason being customers are usually crucial to the viability and profitability of the small business.
